I am currently a Lecturer and educational researcher at the University of Tennessee. I direct our Master of Mathematics distance education (online) program for math educators. In addition, I am an elected Faculty Senator and member of the Dean’s Lecturer Advisory Council.
I have a range of teaching experiences from introductory math for non-majors to graduate courses for math educators. I emphasize a growth mindset and productive struggle for a diverse group of students using research-based strategies. I understand that students' identities deeply affect their experience with mathematics, so I aim to create space for student voices and to encourage equity in the classroom. I also utilize a mix of active learning techniques, such as inquiry-based learning, metacognitive tasks, and alternative assessments.
I am interested in projects which bridge mathematics, research, the practice of teaching, and building community. I was trained in theoretical math for my Ph.D., but I have had the opportunity to learn from fantastic mentors and now primarily use math education tools in my work. My current projects include studies on college calculus, graduate teaching assistants, teacher professional development, and interdisciplinary education.
