The Mathematics Department gives diagnostic exams each August and May on analysis and linear algebra. The purpose of the exam is to determine readiness to succeed in graduate-level work. Any student with an assistantship or fellowship must pass the exam by the beginning of their second year in the program in order for their assistantship or fellowship to be renewed after the second year. Students who do not pass the exam are encouraged to complete an MS degree in their second year. Incoming students are strongly encouraged (but not required) to take the exam during orientation week. New students who do not take or do not pass either exam in August are encouraged to take the corresponding undergraduate course in their first year, prior to taking the exams in May or August.
May 2025 exams are scheduled for Thursday, May 22 at 10:00 am (Analysis) and 1:30 pm (Linear Algebra). Both exams will be 2 hours long. Room: Ayres 110 (Ayres 111 if additional space is needed)
August 2025: Wednesday, August 6 at 10 am (Analysis) and 1:30 pm (Linear Algebra). Both exams will be 2 hours long. Rooms: Ayres 113 (Ayres 112 if additional space is needed).
