If you are an international applicant,
3. ___ an official report of your TOEFL or IELTS score, to be sent directly by the testing agency.

To apply for a graduate teaching assistantship in the Mathematics Department: The graduate teaching assistantship application is a form within the Graduate Admissions application. As you apply for admission, you have the option of completing the supplemental form and applying for an assistantship at the same time.

a. ___ the admission/assistantship application form,

b. ___ transcripts of your complete college and university work to date will be downloaded from the Admission’s web site after you have uploaded them and applied, if you are an international student, your TOEFL/IELTS score,

c. ___ letters of recommendation from at least three of your professors commenting on your academic ability, your potential as a teaching assistant, and (if you are an international applicant) your fluency in English. We prefer to receive letters rather than the Graduate Rating Forms, although the latter are acceptable. Your recommenders will be contacted via email when you submit their names on the application form.

d. ___ statement of purpose and a curriculum vitae with your application materials. The statement should be a brief description of your mathematical interests, experiences related to mathematics beyond regular coursework, and some idea of how a graduate mathematics degree fits into your current career goals.

While the Graduate Record Exams (GRE) are not required, we strongly encourage you to take these tests and furnish us with your scores. Scores on the advanced mathematics exam are particularly useful to us.

To maximize your chances of receiving an assistantship, you should arrange for the above materials to reach us by January 15.  To be considered for additional forms of support, including university fellowships, please complete your application by December 15.

Please feel free to call, write or e-mail us at mathgradprogram@utk.edu at any time to check on the status of your assistantship application. Inquiries regarding the status of your application for admission should be directed to Graduate Admissions and Records, 865-974-3251 or e-mail them at graduateadmissions@utk.edu.

Sincerely,

Tuoc Phan, Chairman
Assistantship Committee
